TMJ Basics

TMJ Dysfunction, explained properly.

Most patients reach this page after years of being investigated one symptom at a time. Here is the whole mechanism in one place.

The basics

Two joints you use thousands of times a day.

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint - the jaw joint. It connects your lower teeth and jaw bone to the skull. You have one on each side, sitting just in front of your ears.

TMJ Dysfunction, also called TMD, is a medical condition where the teeth, jaw bone and facial muscles are unable to work harmoniously together.

That distinction is worth holding onto. Everybody has a TMJ. What patients mean when they say "I have TMJ" is the dysfunction - the joint no longer moving smoothly, and the muscles around it compensating for it all day.

Unlike a knee, the jaw joint does not simply hinge. It rotates and then slides forward. That extra freedom is what lets you open wide - and what makes it vulnerable.
Symptoms

Nine signs, and the reason behind each one.

Because the joint sits against the ear, under the temple and at the top of the neck's postural chain, TMD rarely announces itself at the jaw. This is why it goes unnamed for years.

  • Jaw pain, tightness or soreness

The most direct sign. The muscles that close your jaw are among the strongest in the body, and when the joint sits wrong they stay switched on all day.

  • Clicking, popping or locking when you open

A small disc cushions the joint. When it slips out of place and snaps back, you hear it. Locking means it is no longer making it back on its own.

  • Headaches or migraines, often at the temples

Your temple is a jaw muscle. Clenching loads it for hours, and it refers pain into the forehead and behind the eyes - which is why this is so often misread as tension headache.

  • Ear pain, blocked ears or ringing

The jaw joint sits directly against the ear canal. Patients are frequently treated for an ear infection that repeatedly comes back clear.

  • Neck, shoulder or upper back tension

Your jaw and neck share a postural chain. A jaw pulling to one side is corrected for further down, and the neck pays for it.

  • Difficulty or discomfort chewing

Avoiding steak, apples or a wide yawn is a coping habit, not a preference. Most patients only notice once they are asked.

  • Facial pain or pressure

Overloaded chewing muscles refer pain across the cheek and sinus area, which is why sinus treatment often does nothing for it.

  • Teeth grinding or clenching

Clenching is the top and bottom teeth pressing together. When that pressing moves side-to-side or front-to-back, it becomes grinding - medically, bruxism.

  • Symptoms come and go, then return

The pattern that costs people years. Each quiet spell reads as recovery, so the underlying joint problem is never actually addressed.

Why it gets missed

Four specialists, four clean results, one unexamined joint.

  • The ear feels blocked or rings The ear is examined, and the ear is fine.
  • Headaches at the temples Treated as tension or stress headache.
  • The neck will not release Massage helps for a day, then it returns.
  • Facial pressure Investigated as sinus, and sinus treatment does nothing.

Each investigation is reasonable on its own. Together they describe a pattern nobody is looking at as a pattern. Once TMD is confirmed, a scattered list of complaints resolves into one mechanism with one cause - and for most patients, the relief of having a name for it arrives before the clinical relief does.

Treatment

Non-surgical, and built around your own bite.

TMD is not treated with a single standard appliance handed to every patient. The TMJ Pain Management Program that Dr. Uy curated over ten years addresses the joint mechanics, the muscle overload and the habits that keep re-loading it - which is why it targets recurrence rather than momentary relief.

FAQ

TMJ questions, answered

If yours is not here, message the clinic directly - someone from the team will answer.

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint - your jaw joint. It connects your lower teeth and jaw bone to your skull, and it is the joint you use every time you speak, chew or yawn.

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

TMJ Dysfunction, also called TMD, is a condition where the teeth, jaw bone and facial muscles are unable to work harmoniously together. Because those structures are connected to the head, ears and neck, the symptoms often show up somewhere other than the jaw itself.

How much is the TMJ Health Screening?

The TMJ Health Screening is Php 3,800.00. It is a 15-minute diagnostic appointment and is available for patients aged 12 and above.

Do I need a referral to book?

No referral is needed. Most patients book the TMJ Health Screening directly, and many arrive after other treatments have not resolved their symptoms.

Do you accept HMO or Maxicare?

DBU Dental Care is not affiliated with any HMO or Maxicare provider. We do offer 0% interest installment plans through BPI, HSBC, Chinabank, American Express and Metrobank.

Is TMJ treatment at DBU surgical?

The TMJ Pain Management Program is non-surgical. It is a personalised plan built around your own bite, muscle pattern and diagnosis.

Can TMJ Dysfunction cause headaches?

Yes. When the jaw is misaligned or overworked - often from clenching, grinding or poor posture - it can radiate pain to the temples, forehead and even behind the eyes. This is why TMD headaches are so often mistaken for stress or tension headaches.

What is the difference between grinding and clenching?

The top and bottom teeth pressing on each other is called clenching. When that clenching moves side-to-side or forward-and-backward, it becomes teeth grinding, medically known as dental bruxism.

Stop guessing what your jaw is doing.

The TMJ Health Screening is a 15 minutes diagnostic that tells you whether the joint is the cause. Php 3,800.00, ages 12 and up.
